In particular, low surface hardness in linear bearing applications (55 HRC piston shaft, only non-chrome-plated induction-hardened shafts, mercury steel, etc.) causes scratching on the shaft. This results in the bearing not being able to operate on a clean surface and failing prematurely. The middle section of the shafts has normal hardness, and it is possible to reach the normally hard body by cutting teeth in the middle or removing chips from the hard outer surface.
