How to Control a Servo Motor?

In this week’s blog post, we will take a closer look at servo motors. If you want to learn more about how servo motors are controlled, you can read the blog post we have prepared.

Servo motors are motors that cannot be operated directly from the mains. A servo driver is absolutely necessary to operate a servo motor. Servo motors controlled by a servo driver system are already produced as a set by all manufacturers. Each brand of servo motor must be driven by its own brand. It can be driven by another brand, but this is quite difficult. Servo inverters can perform position control. This means that the motor may malfunction. Servo motor control systems can be driven by a control unit, CNC control unit, or operator panel. Servo motor control is of great importance in terms of production quality. Precise and fast control results in smooth surfaces, ergonomic materials of the desired size, and an economical process in production.

Types of Servo Motor Control

In this section of our article, we will list the different types of servo motor control for you.

Position Control Mode (with External Signal Input)

Servo drives are controllers that perform position control based on the position command received from the servo motor. The control command is an external signal input, and the signal type is measured as a square wave pulse.

Position Control Mode (with Internal Parameter Input)

The control command can also be performed using internal parameters. It is performed by combining eight digital inputs. The control command is selected from among the digital input signals.

When performing position control in servo motors, the motor cable is connected to the servo motor. The encoder cable is connected in the same way. Then, the encoder cable and motor cable are connected to the driver. Dual Control Mode (Dual)

Pt or S control mode can be selected via a digital input signal. Pt or T control mode can also be selected via a digital input signal. Pr or S control mode and Pr or T control mode can also be selected via a digital input signal.

Speed Control Mode

The servo motor controls the target speed using the speed information obtained from the speed control command. The speed control command, which is an internal parameter, can be provided by an external signal or a potentiometer.

Speed Control Mode (Without Analog Input)

The servo motor driver controls the servo motor based on the speed information obtained from the speed control command. The speed control command is an internal parameter. There is no external signal input.

In speed control mode, the motor cable is first connected to the motor. Care must be taken with the notch during this process. The encoder cable is also carefully positioned in the same way. These cables are then connected to the motor driver. For detailed information, please refer to the video below.

Torque Control Mode

The servo motor speed is controlled based on the torque information obtained from the torque control command. This can be either an internal parameter input or an external signal input. It can be selected from digital signals.

Torque Control Mode (Without Analog Input)

The servo motor speed is controlled using information obtained from the torque control command. Input can be obtained from internal parameters. However, there is no external signal input.

JOG Mode

You can watch the video to see how the torque control mode works. This is the name given to the intermittent operation mode. It is the mode in which the motor operates manually at a fixed speed set on the driver. It starts when pressed and stops when released. You can click on the relevant link for detailed information about JOG mode.
