What Is an I/O Card?

An I/O card (Input/Output Card) is a piece of hardware used in industrial automation systems to read signals from sensors and control output devices on a machine. It acts as a bridge between a PLC, CNC control unit, or industrial PC and field equipment. It ensures the safe, fast, and stable processing of digital and analog signals.

The Role of the I/O Card in Automation Systems

I/O cards serve as the physical interface between the automation system and the field. They read inputs such as limit switches, proximity sensors, encoders, buttons, and photoelectric sensors; and control outputs such as relays, valves, contactors, and motors. In servo motor systems, the I/O card manages auxiliary and peripheral control functions rather than motion commands.

Types of I/O Cards

Digital I/O Cards

It is used for signals that operate on an on/off basis. It is preferred in applications such as sensor, button, and relay control. It is the most commonly used type of I/O card in industrial automation.

Analog I/O Cards

It processes analog signals such as 0–10V or 4–20mA. It is used to read and control variables such as pressure, temperature, speed, and position.

Remote I/O Cards (Remote I/O)

It operates via communication protocols such as EtherCAT, Modbus, and CANopen. It is ideal for meeting I/O requirements at remote locations connected to a central control unit.

Industrial I/O Cards

Designed for demanding operating conditions. It offers high resistance to vibration, electromagnetic interference, and temperature fluctuations.

I/O Card Prices

I/O card prices vary depending on the number of channels, signal type, and communication protocol.
