We at Şahin Rulman have decided to prepare a guide for you on this subject. In this regard, let’s list the causes of stepper motor noise problems and the basic steps that can be taken to address them:
- Although the structure of each type of stepper motor differs, stepper motors can generally be operated correctly at a voltage value between 20V and 50V. Depending on the structure of the motor, operating it at a voltage within this range can prevent noise issues with the stepper motor.
- If the stepper motor makes noise during rotation, it is likely that the PLC pulse frequency is outside the correct range. Although it varies depending on the type of stepper motor, it is generally preferred to drive it at 35 KHz. If it needs to be driven at a higher value, it may be beneficial to reduce the microstep setting. Indeed, if the pulse frequency is kept high without reducing the microstep setting, the stepper motor may experience a stalling problem after a certain period of time. In other words, it may not be able to maintain the required frequency.
- If a noise problem occurs in the stepper motor as soon as power is supplied to the driver you are using with the stepper motor, it is highly likely that your driver has malfunctioned. In this case, you can review the checks you need to perform on your driver. Another possible cause in a similar situation could be an error in the connection. Therefore, in this case, you can also perform checks to eliminate connection errors.
- If the microstep setting is set to 1/2, 1/4, or 1/8, there is no need to worry about the resulting stepper motor noise issue. Indeed, if the setting is set to these values, the stepper motor may naturally produce noise. The stepper motor noise problem becomes more pronounced at low frequency settings and less pronounced at high frequency settings.
- If the motor makes noise while in the stop position, it indicates a technical malfunction. If you cannot identify the root cause of the problem, it is recommended to consult the relevant authorities.
